WORLD EDUCATION GAMES

5th to 7th March

This is an online event,competition-World Education Games. Sponsored by UNICEF and Samsung in hopes to promote schooling. The first event took place in year 2007. It is an educational competition for students ages 4 to 18. Check out the official website here for more information.

But I say, it doesn't need to only be online or for the mentioned ages above. Make it Game Nights for ages 4 to 94. Organize competitions at your home or go to your children's school and let headmaster/teachers know about it.

5th of March Literacy Day

Round your children and their friends, and your friends and the rest of the family and have a quiz. Since now you know about it, you can think of the questions and workshops that can be done, let them know of the material they should prepare. Which book to read, poem, film, which author should they research, time in history. You can prepare snacks and drinks that are consumed in a specific book or by an author. It could be a book discussion or an essay competition. You can play pantomime, acting out book titles.

6th of March Maths Day

It doesn't need to be about numbers and equations. Ask the participants to tell a story about one of the greatest mathematicians. Or why they love maths, what is the most interesting for them. Why they don't like it. Make a maths treasure map for them to find sweets.

7th of March Science Day

Here, you can be as creative as you want. Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Cosmology, Geography, History and many many more. Play Interesting Geography. Its a game where you divide a paper into ten vertical lines. Rows are: Country, City, Sea, River, Mountain, Plant, Animal, Object. You can change and add. the last row is Score. Choose a letter and go on writing all of the above starting with the chosen letter. For example, Albany, Ankara, Adriatic, Amazon, Alps, Avocado, Armadillo, Antenna... the first one to finish counts to 20, once counted every one has to put their pans down. Scoring works like this, if you have different, lets say countries, you get 10 points, if they are the same you get 5 points, if one of you didn't have time or didn't know a country starting on that letter gets a 0 and the one that managed to write it gets a 20. If there are more than 2 people playing it is very hard to get a 20. So now you add up your scores and write it in the same line with the letter, at the end score is added and the one with the highest score wins. You can have a history quiz, or watch a movie that portrays part of history, or is a main theme/subject,have a discussion. Organize a field trip to a natural museum. Ask one of your friends that work in the science field to talk about their occupation and job. Also, depending on what your children are interested in, could be aviation, universe, art- get down to the science of it.

Everyone is a winner, but there is a Champion of Champions. Who should get the biggest gold medal and the others too, a smaller one. Make certificates for participation.

Have educational family fun. Ask your kids to prepare questions and challenges for you and your partner. That should be fun too.

Happy World Education Games!!!
